About The Role

Islington Heritage Service seeks an Engagement Coordinator for an exciting community heritage project in Mildmay ward. The right person will be a capable, personable individual with a keen interest in history, green spaces and community engagement. The role is part-time, fixed-term for 12 months. The post holder will work 9am-5pm, three days a week.

Jewish Reform Pioneers: Uncovering BPR Cemetery's hidden histories is a National Lottery Heritage Fund Project, overseen by Islington's Heritage Service. Balls Pond Road Cemetery is a Grade II Listed Building located in the ward of Mildmay in Islington. It has a vital role in the story of Reform Judaism in Britain. The site has been closed for 70 years which has led to a visible deterioration. Islington Heritage Service has been awarded a grant by the National Lottery Heritage Fund to undertake urgent restoration works to the site. In partnership with the owners of the site, the West London Synagogue, Islington Heritage Service will undertake specialist surveys and works to stabilise the site, to leave it in a condition where its needs are cared for and managed, making it accessible for longer term public access.

As part of this project, we wish to recruit an Engagement Coordinator who will work with residents and the wider community to work with a diverse audience and volunteer base. Development of this network will be supported by partnership work within the council, the West London Synagogue and community organisations in Mildmay. The Engagement Coordinator will build on these networks to create activities and events that allow access to the site, giving volunteers opportunities to develop skills, learn more about local history and feel part of their community through participation.

Working for the team, service and our organisation

Islington is a place rich with diversity and culture. As a council our sense of purpose couldn’t be clearer: we serve. It’s in the logo. We are committed to challenging inequality in the borough and as one of the largest employers we know that to look after the place and the planet, we have to look after our people. Together we can change the future.

We are determined to create a more equal Islington, where everyone who lives here has an equal chance to thrive.

To do this, everyone who works at Islington Council lives by a set of values which guide us in everything that we do: collaborative, ambitious, resourceful, and empowering. They spell out ‘CARE’, which is what we think public service is all about.

Watch our video to hear more about our mission and how you can help us achieve it from the Leader of the Council, Cllr Kaya Comer-Schwartz.
