We have an exciting opportunity for a passionate and experienced Digital Communications Officer to join our talented and supportive digital communications team.

In this role, you’ll lead our email communications, crafting messages that captivate and engage our digital audiences, ensuring they stand out in crowded inboxes. You’ll also work across various digital channels, including social media and web, and contribute to a range of exciting digital projects and campaigns.

You’ll play a key role in growing our email subscribers and engagement, refining our targeting and segmentation strategies, maintaining brand standards, and telling compelling stories through short-form video. You’ll also explore new opportunities to amplify our content’s reach.

Main duties of the job
  • To engage residents and other stakeholders through the development and delivery of creative and high-quality digital content, particularly email, social media and other messaging platforms, and to play a key role in managing the council’s digital channels.  
  • To work across a range of digital channels including the corporate website, microsites/blogs such as IslingtonLife.london, social media, and e-bulletins, ensuring that communications is targeted and clearly evaluated. 
  • To perform a key role in telling the council’s story, communicating its priorities, and creating compelling campaigns about the work the council is doing to make Islington a more equal borough.  
  • To work on multiple projects simultaneously, delivering high-quality, engaging content and campaigns on time, on brand, and on message, as well as ensuring the council is delivering tailored content to its audiences.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
 
The postholder will have lead responsibility and accountability for the following:    
  • To plan, lead, deliver and evaluate digital communications campaigns that support the objectives set out in the council’s Strategic Plan 
  • Support the implementation of a new digital communications and engagement strategy that ensures council services take advantage of the opportunities and benefits digital channels offer 
  • To work with the Digital Communications Engagement Manager and Senior Digital Communications Officer to support major or high-profile digital communications projects, working collaboratively 
  • To develop and grow users and subscribers to the council’s digital channels, particularly social media and email marketing 
  • Use digital tools to build a more targeted approach to engaging with external audiences, especially looking at how we can engage with hard-to-reach audiences 
  • To play a key role in rationalising and policing the council’s web channels and overseeing the decision-making and production of microsites, setting clear and measurable objectives 
  • To follow clear project management and planning processes, ensuring content is coordinated and executed in a coordinated way to maximise engagement 
  • Help to manage social media and comms inbox, and respond to enquiries in a timely way and help protect council's reputation 
  • To ensure digital channels and content meet accessibility legislation and requirements 
  • To generate ideas to improve digital communications channels and content, ensuring the council stays relevant in an ever-changing environment 
  • To offer digital communications advice to senior officers and service leads as appropriate, and to advise on best practice to make the most of digital channels 
  • To individually generate content and work with others to do so, such as web content, video filming and editing, social media and email copy etc 
  • To work with Strategic Campaigns Advisors and services to deliver integrated forward plans, ensuring work and projects are presented to residents, businesses and stakeholders in a coordinated way that is connected to the council’s key mission and objectives. 
  • To support the delivery of the wider communications service’s objectives, giving advice and support to colleagues on major campaigns. 
  • Supporting the development of the council’s digital, brand and creative, public affairs, and engagement functions through close collaboration and working within the team 
  • Working with the Participation and Engagement Manager, ensure that engagement is embedded within communications work, giving residents a voice in our work 
  • Contribute towards council print publications, and their associated digital channels 
  • Ensure communications work is driven by research, data and insight, and is culturally competent for Islington’s communities  
  • Attend meetings and events in evenings and weekends as required, with time off in lieu 
  • To explore options for using new, low-cost digital and social media and create internet-ready content including video, audio and imagery
  • To provide reports on digital media engagement, including social media analytics and mentions, Google analytics and newsletter reports; reporting back to colleagues.
