About The Role

In your role as a Senior Social Worker, you will be responsible for executing, and supporting others to execute a wide range of statutory duties under the Care Act, Mental Capacity Act, and other relevant laws and policies. Your role will be performed with a focus on strengths, striving for high-quality outcomes, and a commitment to continuous improvement in your practice and those that you supervise. You will work collaboratively with residents, caregivers, community organisations, and other key professionals to promote independence.

You will understand the significant impact that a well-functioning team can have on individuals requiring care and support, their caregivers, the council, and the entire adult social care department. This understanding will guide your practice and practice of those you support, where you will prioritise delaying and preventing the need for social care intervention. You will engage in strengths-based conversations and adopt a relationship-based, person-centred approach to maximise the use of informal support systems and enable individuals to live their lives as they wish.

As a vital part of a multidisciplinary team, which includes social workers, occupational therapists, case managers, and support workers/advisers, you will work in a fast-paced environment at the heart of the Council’s corporate customer centre to deliver positive outcomes for residents with adult social care needs.

In your role supporting young people transitioning into adulthood, you will work within a team that ensures both the needs and opportunities to enhance the independence and status of young adults are addressed. You will recognise the novelty of this transition for families and will nurture and positively encourage them throughout the assessment process. The team serves two distinct groups of young people. One group includes young people diagnosed with Global Learning Disabilities, who can receive your support and additional support from an integrated team of Psychiatry, Psychology, Speech and Language, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, and LD nurses as needed.

The team also support young people without a diagnosed Learning Disability, who you will assist in preparing them for adulthood, even in the absence of other health-related professionals who are not part of the integrated partnership offer.

As a Senior Social Worker you will be expected to have a small caseload whilst supervising other social workers in the team. You will also be expected to work alongside other Seniors in the team to contribute towards overall team development and deputise for the manager in their absence.

Working for the team, service and our organisation

Islington is a place rich with diversity and culture. As a council our sense of purpose couldn’t be clearer: we serve. It’s in the logo. We are committed to challenging inequality in the borough and as one of the largest employers we know that to look after the place and the planet, we have to look after our people. Together we can change the future.

We are determined to create a more equal Islington, where everyone who lives here has an equal chance to thrive.

To do this, everyone who works at Islington Council lives by a set of values which guide us in everything that we do: collaborative, ambitious, resourceful, and empowering. They spell out ‘CARE’, which is what we think public service is all about.

Watch our video to hear more about our mission and how you can help us achieve it from the Leader of the Council, Cllr Kaya Comer-Schwartz.
