About The Role

Compelling story-teller required

Due to a successful internal promotion we need a new assistant to help us tell the best stories from across the council. These will be the tales that make our hearts melt, or sing with pride, but also the ones that show the hard graft we put in and excellent results we get out as we do our best for Islington every day.

If you can spin a yarn, love a meme and consider yourself very well organised, this could be your ideal job…

The role includes video filming and editing, social media and email copy, and writing for marketing collateral, press and colleague communications.

You’ll provide advice on communications to council colleagues on how to promote and market their work and how best to involve residents in their decision-making.

Joining a corporate communications team with a reputation for excellent delivery and outcomes, you’ll learn on the job as well as being offered bespoke training from some of the best communicators in the Industry.

The postholder will have responsibility for the following:

  • Producing written, video and audio communications as directed by managers
  • Generating innovative communications ideas and creating engaging content for all council channels, and to support the team to deliver its strategic objectives
  • Supporting the production of media work, marketing collateral, events and internal communications work, helping to plan, research and edit content, arrange interviews, support event organisation and other tasks
  • Commissioning and working with the Brand and creative, and Digital Communications and Engagement teams, in particular, to generate eye-catching and engaging visual content for social media, email marketing and marketing collateral
  • Attending meetings with services and to work with them to understand service communication priorities and effectively forward plan
  • To contribute to team forward planning and evaluation processes
  • To develop and maintain positive and productive working relationships with a range of colleagues across the council, and external partners where necessary
  • Attending evening or weekend meetings or events when necessary, with time off in lieu

This is a fantastic opportunity to launch your career in council communications and you never know where it will take you.

As an employer we offer excellent training, pensions, discounts on shopping and entertainments, and hold regular colleague events. These include an annual staff awards, which this year demonstrated that some colleagues have been in post for over 40 years and have risen from apprentice to director level all under one roof. This year there were 415 peer led nominations and every one of them told the story of an inspiring individual doing outstanding work to provide the best outcomes for Islington. If this sounds like the kind of place you’d like to be working, please apply.

Working for the team, service and our organisation

Islington is a place rich with diversity and culture. As a council our sense of purpose couldn’t be clearer: we serve. It’s in the logo. We are committed to challenging inequality in the borough and as one of the largest employers we know that to look after the place and the planet, we have to look after our people. Together we can change the future.

We are determined to create a more equal Islington, where everyone who lives here has an equal chance to thrive.

To do this, everyone who works at Islington Council lives by a set of values which guide us in everything that we do: collaborative, ambitious, resourceful, and empowering. They spell out ‘CARE’, which is what we think public service is all about.

Watch our video to hear more about our mission and how you can help us achieve it from the Leader of the Council, Cllr Kaya Comer-Schwartz.
